Details of the planning software
Visual Planning® is a web-based ‘n-tier’ Java application that runs on servers within a network using databases. Here are the technical specifications
LAN or WAN (Web) use
Minimum requirements for the server environment
For smaller installations with fewer than ten users, the following configuration can be used as a technical starting point:
- Processor: at least 4 processor cores running at approximately 2 GHz or higher
- Working memory: at least 16 GB RAM
- Storage space: At least 5 GB of free storage space for the application
- Operating system: Supported 64-bit Windows Server operating system
- Database: Supported database management system in accordance with the current release for the Visual Planning version in use
In addition, sufficient storage space must be allocated for database content, log files, documents, temporary files and backups.
The actual requirements may be significantly higher, depending on the number of users, data volume, and the number and size of plans, reports, interfaces and processes running simultaneously.
Network and availability
For Visual Planning®, a stable and reliable network connection is more important than any particular internet access technology.
The required bandwidth depends in particular on the number of users working simultaneously, the volume of planning data, the modules used, and the reports, imports, exports and interfaces being carried out.
The following points in particular must be taken into account in the technical design:
- available bandwidth
- Network latency
- Packet loss and connection stability
- Number of concurrent users
- Data volume and scope of planning
- Access via LAN, WAN, VPN or the Internet
- Firewall, proxy, routing and port forwarding
- SSL/TLS certificates for external access
- internal or public name resolution
A flat-rate minimum bandwidth per user is not a meaningful figure for every environment. The required performance should be assessed on the basis of the number of users, the size of the plans and the specific usage scenario.
The server address used during installation must be reliably accessible to all authorised clients. Depending on the system environment, this may be a static IP address, a fully resolvable server name or a domain name.
The address used must not be changed after installation without prior technical verification, as the server name, domain or IP address may affect accessibility, configuration and licensing.
When accessing the site via the internet, a secure HTTPS connection should be used. If the Visual Planning server is only accessible within the company network, external users will require a suitable VPN connection or another secure access solution .
Any changes to the server name, domain, IP address, ports or access structure should be agreed in advance with the relevant administrator or Visual Planning support.
TSE / Citrix environment
Minimum requirements for the server environment
For a small terminal server or Citrix installation with fewer than ten users, the following configuration can be used as a technical starting point:
- Processor: at least 4 processor cores running at approximately 2 GHz or higher
- Working memory: at least 16 GB RAM
- Storage space: At least 5 GB of free storage space for the application
- Operating system: Supported 64-bit Windows Server operating system
- Database: Supported database management system in accordance with the current release for the Visual Planning version in use
- Terminal server: Supported TSE, Remote Desktop or Citrix environments
If several sessions are active simultaneously, additional processor and RAM capacity must be provided. The required capacity depends on the number of users, the scope of the open plans and the functions being executed simultaneously.
In addition, sufficient storage space must be allocated for user profiles, temporary files, documents, reports, exports, database content and backups.
Technical requirements for clients
A suitable client for the terminal server or Citrix environment in use must be installed and configured on the users’ devices.
Depending on the system environment, user profiles, printer assignments, file access, the clipboard, screen resolution and local drives must also be taken into account.
Network for terminal servers and Citrix
When running VPDesk via a terminal server or Citrix environment, the application itself runs within the central server environment.
The connection between the terminal server or Citrix server, the Visual Planning server and the database must be stable, sufficiently scaled and permanently available.
When determining the required capacity, the following factors in particular must be taken into account:
- Number of concurrent sessions
- Processor performance and RAM per session
- Scope and complexity of the open plans
- Connection to the Visual Planning server and the database
- Generation of comprehensive reports and exports
- Access to files, printers and documents
- User profiles and session management
- Latency and stability in external connections
- Packet loss and connection fluctuations
For users accessing the terminal server or Citrix environment via WAN, VPN or the Internet, low latency, a stable connection and, as far as possible, no packet loss are crucial.
A flat-rate minimum bandwidth per user is of only limited use even in a terminal server or Citrix environment. The required performance should be determined on the basis of the number of users, the technology used, the screen resolution and the specific usage scenario .
The final sizing and configuration should be carried out in consultation with the relevant IT partner or system administrator.
Technical platform and system components
The technical requirements of Visual Planning® depend on the version used, the number of concurrent users, the volume of data, the modules used, the interfaces and the chosen operating mode.
Prior to any installation, migration or update, the intended operating system, database and application components are checked against the latest manufacturer’s release .
Supported database systems
Visual Planning® requires a supported relational database management system. Depending on the version of Visual Planning used, the following database platforms in particular can be used:
- Microsoft SQL Server
- PostgreSQL
- MariaDB or MySQL
- Oracle Database
The specific database version, edition and configuration must be checked against the current release matrix prior to installation or an upgrade.
Database versions that are no longer supported should be migrated to a supported version before updating Visual Planning® to a released version. This applies in particular to older versions of Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL and MariaDB.
Database access
The Visual Planning server accesses the database via a network connection. To do this, a separate database account with the necessary permissions is set up.
The database account, authentication, connection parameters and the necessary permissions must be agreed with the relevant database administrator prior to installation.
For Microsoft SQL Server, depending on the system environment, either SQL Server authentication or integrated Windows authentication can be used.
Java Runtime Environment and application server
Visual Planning® is based on Java technology. Which Java Runtime Environment is used on the server depends on the version of Visual Planning installed and the installation package provided.
The former name ‘JAVA SUN’ is no longer used. In current installations, authorised Java or OpenJDK components are used.
VPDeskLauncher
The VPDeskLauncher is available for VPDesk. This contains the approved OpenJDK runtime environment required for VPDesk. As a result, it is not usually necessary to install a separate Java installation on the workstation.
The version of the VPDeskLauncher must match the version of Visual Planning in use and should be provided via the official installation packages.
Application server
In a standard installation, the application server provided with Visual Planning® or authorised for use with it is utilised.
Historical information regarding older versions of Tomcat, WebLogic, WebSphere or JBoss is not relevant to current installations and is therefore no longer published as a general compatibility list.
If Visual Planning® is to be integrated into an existing application server, the compatibility of the specific version, Java Runtime, deployment structure and security configuration must be checked in advance.
An application server that differs from the standard may require additional installation, testing and maintenance services.
Access via VPDesk, VPPortal and VPGo
VPDesk
VPDesk is the rich client for comprehensive planning, administration and configuration of Visual Planning®.
To run the software, you will need a supported workstation operating system, the appropriate VPDeskLauncher, a stable connection to the Visual Planning server and the necessary user rights.
The resource requirements of the workstation depend on the size of the plans, the number of views open at the same time and the reports used.
VPPortal
VPPortal enables browser-based access to shared plans.
You will need a current, supported web browser, an accessible VPPortal address, a valid user account and appropriately configured permissions.
For external access, VPPortal should be made available via a secure HTTPS connection.
VPGo
VPGo makes selected tasks, appointments and feedback options available on suitable mobile devices .
Prerequisites include a supported VPGo app, an accessible Visual Planning environment, a valid licence, configured mobile views and the appropriate user rights.
If the Visual Planning server is only accessible within the company network, a secure public address or a VPN connection is required for external use.
Hosting and on-premises
Depending on the package selected, Visual Planning® can be operated as a hosted solution or within the customer’s own IT infrastructure .
Hosted solution
With a hosted solution, the server, application server, database and the technical infrastructure are provided by the respective hosting provider .
Depending on the package, this may be a shared SaaS environment or a dedicated server.
Responsibilities for operation, backups, updates, monitoring and recovery are governed by the agreed hosting contract.
Custom interfaces, additional services or specific security requirements must be assessed in advance to determine their feasibility within the chosen hosting model .
On-premises
With an on-premises installation, Visual Planning® is run on the customer’s IT infrastructure or in their data centre.
The customer or their IT partner provides the approved server, database, network and security environment.
This includes, in particular, operating system maintenance, database backups, certificates, firewall rules, monitoring, storage space and recovery procedures.
Any changes to the server name, domain, IP address, database or system architecture should be agreed with Visual Planning Support prior to implementation.
Data backup and security
For self-hosted installations, data backup, access control and recovery must be managed by the operator of the system environment.
Data backup
- Regular backups of the Visual Planning database
- Backing up configuration and application files
- Backing up linked document directories
- Storage of multiple backup states
- external or separate storage of important backups
- Monitoring of executed backup jobs
- Regular recovery testing
- Documentation of restart procedures
A server snapshot alone does not always replace a consistent database backup. The backup procedure should therefore be agreed with the database administrator.
Security
- Individual user accounts and secure passwords
- role-based access and function rights
- HTTPS encryption for browser-based external access
- Latest operating system and security updates
- Firewall and network segmentation
- Restrictions on administrative access
- Monitoring of services, storage space and logs
- Proper handling of users who have left the organisation
- Documentation of technical and organisational measures
When processing personal data, the applicable data protection regulations, internal guidelines and retention periods must also be taken into account.
Technical requirements for interfaces
Depending on the version used and the scope of the project, Visual Planning® can be integrated with other systems via APIs, database access and import and export processes.
Interfaces to ERP, CRM, HR, production or other specialised systems are planned and implemented on a project-by-project basis.
Before work begins, at least the following points must be clarified:
- Source and target systems involved
- the leading system in each data area
- Data and data fields to be transferred
- Available REST, SOAP or other APIs
- potential database or file access
- Translation direction
- Synchronisation interval or trigger
- Authentication and authorisation
- Encryption of data transmission
- Error handling and retry logic
- Logging and monitoring
- Test, acceptance and production systems
- Responsibilities for operation and maintenance
REST and SOAP APIs
REST and SOAP interfaces are available for compatible Visual Planning installations. To access them, the relevant licences, authorisations and API credentials are required.
The specific range of functions depends on the API version used and the version of Visual Planning installed.
Database accesses
Direct database access should only take place via agreed and documented procedures. Write access to the Visual Planning database must not be implemented without prior technical verification.
Where possible, approved APIs or controlled import and export processes are used for interfaces.
Jointly review the technical environment
Before any installation, migration or expansion, we work with you and your IT department to assess the existing system environment. This enables us to coordinate the server, database, network, number of users, modules and interfaces at an early stage to ensure they are all compatible.
